  • How to Replace the Water Filter on a Bosch Refrigerator

    May 14, 2026 5 min read

Bosch refrigerators use the UltraClarity filtration system, which uses a proprietary internal twist-in filter design shared across most Bosch and Thermador French door, side-by-side, and built-in models.

The replacement process is straightforward, but the filter location inside Bosch refrigerators is less immediately obvious than in many other brands -- and a small number of older Bosch models use a completely different Sanitary Quick Change filter design. Knowing which system your fridge has before ordering a replacement saves the most common first-timer mistake.

Step 1 -- Identify the Right Bosch Filter

The table below covers the two Bosch filter configurations and the models they fit.

The most reliable identification method is to open the refrigerator and locate the existing filter. On UltraClarity models, the filter is a long cylindrical cartridge housed in a dedicated compartment typically on the upper left interior of the fresh food section or inside the left door. The part number is printed on the cartridge. The
DFS Fridge Filter Finder confirms the correct replacement by refrigerator brand and model number if the existing filter is unavailable.

Step 2 -- Remove the Old Filter

For UltraClarity models: Open the filter compartment door (it flips open or slides) to expose the filter. Grip the filter cartridge and rotate it counterclockwise approximately a quarter-turn. Pull it straight out. Keep a small towel nearby -- a few drops of water typically release on removal. The water supply shuts off automatically when the filter is removed.

For CS-52 Sanitary Quick Change models: Press the release tab on the filter housing and pull the cartridge straight out.

Step 3 -- Install the New Filter

Remove the new filter from packaging, peel off all protective caps, and inspect the O-rings. For UltraClarity models, insert the new filter into the compartment and rotate it clockwise until it locks firmly into position. The filter must be pushed in firmly before rotating -- partial rotation leaves the water valve closed and no water will flow from the dispenser. Close the filter compartment door. For CS-52 models, push the new filter into the housing until it clicks.

Flush 2 to 3 gallons through the water dispenser and discard before drinking. Bosch recommends this step to clear carbon fines and trapped air from the new cartridge.

Step 4 -- Reset the Filter Indicator

On most Bosch models, press and hold the Reset button on the control panel for 3 seconds until the filter indicator resets. On some newer Bosch models with electronic displays, the reset is accessible through the Settings menu.

On a small number of Bosch models, the filter indicator resets automatically when the new filter is properly installed and the compartment door is closed -- check your owner's manual if the indicator does not respond to the button hold.

    Finding Bosch Filters at DFS

DFS carries both OEM Bosch filters and certified compatible replacements for all current Bosch filter configurations. The OEM Bosch 9000 077104 UltraClarity filter is the genuine Bosch replacement for all models using the BORPLFTR10 / REPLFLTR10 / 644845 designation. The Tier1 REPLFLTR10 compatible replacement is certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 372, rated for up to 750 gallons or 6 months -- higher capacity than most standard refrigerator filters -- and fits all Bosch models using the UltraClarity housing.

The USWF BORPLFTR10 replacement is manufactured in the USA with a 0.5-micron coconut carbon block, independently tested to NSF/ANSI standards, and fits the same UltraClarity housing. For older Bosch models using the Sanitary Quick Change design, the Tier1 CS-52 / 640565 replacement is certified to NSF 42 and 372, rated for 300 gallons or 6 months. The full Bosch refrigerator filters collection covers all current and compatible options.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What water filter does a Bosch refrigerator use?

Most Bosch and Thermador refrigerators use the UltraClarity filter system -- the BORPLFTR10, REPLFLTR10, or 644845 designation. A smaller number of older Bosch models use the CS-52 Sanitary Quick Change design. The part number is printed on the existing filter cartridge and is the most reliable identification method.

How do I reset the water filter light on a Bosch refrigerator?

On most Bosch models, press and hold the Reset button on the control panel for 3 seconds until the indicator resets. On newer models with an electronic display, the reset may be accessible through the Settings menu. On some models, the indicator resets automatically when the filter compartment door is properly closed after installation.

Why is my Bosch refrigerator not dispensing water after I changed the filter?

The most common cause is a filter that was not fully rotated into the locked position. The UltraClarity filter must be pushed firmly into the housing and rotated clockwise until it locks -- partial rotation leaves the water valve closed. Remove the filter and reinstall with deliberate firm pressure, rotating until fully locked.

How long does a Bosch UltraClarity filter last?

The Tier1 REPLFLTR10 compatible replacement is rated for 750 gallons or 6 months -- higher capacity than most standard refrigerator filters. The OEM Bosch UltraClarity filter is rated for approximately 300 gallons or 6 months. Reduced dispenser flow, a change in water taste, or the filter indicator light are all reliable signals to replace.

Do I need to shut off the water supply to replace a Bosch refrigerator filter?

No. The UltraClarity housing seals automatically when the filter is removed, so no water supply shutoff is required. A small amount of residual water may drip during removal -- keeping a towel nearby is sufficient preparation.

Can I use a compatible replacement filter in my Bosch refrigerator?

Yes. Compatible filters from Tier1 and USWF are engineered to fit the same UltraClarity housing and carry equivalent NSF certifications. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act generally prevents manufacturers from voiding a warranty solely because a certified compatible replacement part was used.

How do I flush a new Bosch refrigerator filter?

Dispense 2 to 3 gallons of water through the refrigerator dispenser and discard it before drinking. This clears carbon fines and trapped air from the new cartridge. Cloudiness or slight sputtering during the flush is normal and clears quickly.
