The American Plumber W5P is a 5-micron pleated cellulose sediment filter designed for whole house applications. It has a filtration capacity of approximately 20,000 gallons or up to 3 months of service life, depending on your household's water quality and usage. The 5-micron rating effectively captures sand, silt, rust, scale particles, and other sediment from your incoming water supply, protecting your plumbing, appliances, and downstream filtration equipment.

The American Plumber W5P measures 9-3/4" in length with a 2-1/2" outer diameter, making it a standard size compatible with most 10-inch whole house filter housings. It fits American Plumber housings including the W10-PR, WLCS-1000, and similar standard Big Blue-compatible 10" systems. Always verify your housing's inner dimensions before ordering to ensure a proper fit and seal.

The W5P should be replaced every 3 months or after 20,000 gallons, whichever comes first. However, if you notice reduced water pressure throughout your home, visible discoloration on the pleated media, or sediment bypassing the filter, replace it sooner. Homes on well water or municipal supplies with high sediment levels may require replacement every 1–2 months to maintain optimal flow and protection.

Although the W5P features a pleated cellulose design that some users attempt to rinse, the manufacturer recommends replacing it rather than washing it. Rinsing can damage the pleated media, compromise the 5-micron rating, and release trapped contaminants back into your water supply. For consistent sediment reduction and reliable whole house protection, always install a new W5P cartridge at the recommended service interval.

The American Plumber W5P is specifically engineered for sediment reduction, targeting particulate matter 5 microns and larger. This includes sand, silt, rust flakes, dirt, scale, and suspended solids. It does not remove chlorine, chemicals, lead, or dissolved contaminants—for those, pair the W5P with a carbon-based whole house filter downstream.
