Ultraviolet light is an effective, environmentally friendly disinfection process that kills bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms that can contaminate your water supply. This type of filtration system ensures that your water supply is free of contaminants that we don't visibly see.
WHAT IS ULTRAVIOLET WATER FILTRATION?
Ultraviolet (UV) is a spectrum of light just below the range visible to the human eye. With a germicidal wavelength of 253.7 nanometers, ultraviolet light alters the genetic (DNA) material in cells so that bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms can no longer reproduce. It's a chemical-free water treatment gaining in popularity around the globe because of its great results, cost effectiveness, and ease of use.
HOW IT WORKS
Ultraviolet disinfection uses a powerful UV light source that's enclosed in a transparent protective sleeve, mounted so that water can pass through a flow chamber. When microorganisms are exposed to the light, it destroys or inactivates their DNA; thus, preventing the bacteria from reproducing and making them incapable of causing disease or illness. Microorganisms must come in contact with the light in order to be effected, so it's important that large particles of sediment do not block or interrupt the light waves.
WHEN TO USE IT
UV filtration systems are recommended for water sourced from a well or natural bodies of water like lakes, streams and rivers. If your water is coming from a municipal water source, a UV filter isn't needed.
It's a great treatment option if you want to clean, safe water but don't want to add chemicals like chlorine to kill bacteria or sacrifice water pressure.
BENEFITS OF ULTRAVIOLET WATER FILTERS
Effective results
Proven to be a fast, dependable and cost effective type of water treatment, UV filtration is one of just four water disinfection methods approved by the FDA. Additionally, the EPA has recognized its use as an effective disinfectant.
Ecofriendly treatment
Disinfecting your drinking water with ultraviolet light (UV) is an environmentally safe treatment that wastes no water, and purifies without adding chemicals or creating new chemical complexes. Treating water with UV doesn't remove any beneficial minerals found in water, nor does it change the taste or odor of the water.
Illness prevention
It's scientifically proven that 85% of child sickness and 65% of adult diseases are the result of water-borne viruses, bacteria and intestinal protozoa like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Untreated or poorly treated water can lead to heath problems like hepatitis B, tuberculosis, meningitis, typhoid fever, tricomoniasis, and cholera, glaucoma, gastrointestinal pain, salmonella, poliovirus, and diarrhea. Additionally, more than 80,000 people in North America are infected annually by an extremely dangerous strain of e. coli bacteria. Fortunately, all these contaminants are easily inactivated by UV light.
Cost effective
An inexpensive system to maintain, UV water filtration is a versatile purification process that can that can be applied to almost any water system. It's increasingly being adopted around the world as a way of treating unsafe water sources because of its cost effectiveness, ease of use and proven results.
WHAT'S REMOVED?
UV treatment removes 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts such as giardia, e. Coli, and cryptosporidia.
RECOMMENDED FILTERS
It's highly recommended to position the UV light as the last stage in a filtration system before entering the home. If large particulates pass through the UV system, they can shade the microorganisms, prevent them from being killed by exposure to the light.
